DARK & BRIGHT CAVE - A HIDDEN GEM IN LAN HA BAY

Nestled in the breathtaking beauty of Lan Ha Bay, Dark & Bright Cave is a hidden gem that promises adventure and tranquility for nature lovers and thrillseekers alike. Known for its stunning limestone formations and enchanting caves, this destination offers an unparalleled opportunity to explore Vietnam's rich natural heritage. Whether you're paddling through crystal-clear waters in a kayak or simply soaking in the serene landscape, Dark & Bright Cave invites you to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

The location of Dark & Bright Cave

Dark & Bright Cave, also known as Bright Cave and Dark Cave, is located in Lan Ha Bay, part of the Cat Ba Archipelago in Hai Phong, Vietnam. This enchanting spot lies at the intersection of Lan Ha Bay and Halong Bay, offering a breathtaking escape into nature. The cave extends about 70 meters through a limestone formation and is primarily accessible by kayak or rowboat, making it a must-visit for adventurers and nature lovers alike.

The Beauty of Dark & Bright Cave

As you paddle through the entrance, you are greeted by a mesmerizing natural landscape. Inside the cave, you’ll find a vast lagoon surrounded by diverse limestone cliffs, shimmering stalactites, and unique rock formations that have developed over millions of years. This surreal environment creates a tranquil oasis, inviting visitors to leave behind the hustle and bustle of daily life and immerse themselves in the beauty of nature.

Dark & Bright Cave is distinctive not only for its scenic beauty but also for its unique formation. Unlike many caves that are formed entirely underground, this cave emerges from the sea, shaped by numerous small and large islands over time.

Entering Dark & Bright Cave is like stepping into a different realm. Visitors can witness a small lagoon encased by towering limestone islands, creating a breathtaking view. Not long ago, tourists could paddle deeper into Dark Cave to observe vibrant fish and beautiful coral reefs. However, due to tidal changes and conservation efforts, these activities have been limited to ensure the safety and preservation of this pristine environment.

Kayaking Adventures in Dark & Bright Cave

Dark & Bright Cave is renowned for its picturesque kayaking routes, offering safety and seclusion away from typical waterway traffic. The tranquil atmosphere, enhanced by gentle currents and towering mountains, makes this spot unique. It is the only place in Lan Ha Bay where visitors can explore four caves in one trip: Dark Cave, Bright Cave, Trung Trang Cave, and Jellyfish Cave.

Among these, Dark Cave is the longest at over 200 meters, featuring narrow and dark passages that require kayaks equipped with flashlights and can only be navigated during low tide. Bright Cave, Trung Trang Cave, and Jellyfish Cave boast higher ceilings, making them accessible to small boats or kayaks. The route covering all four caves spans approximately 5.3 kilometers and takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes to complete. If Dark Cave is inaccessible due to tidal conditions or management restrictions, visitors can still paddle to explore the other three caves—a journey of around 4.1 kilometers that takes under 45 minutes. Kayaking in Dark & Bright is permitted in the mornings from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and in the afternoons from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Best time to visit Dark & Bright Cave
